The National Center for Water Quality Research supports the sustainable use of soil and water resources in addition to helping protect human health and ecological integrity of aquatic ecosystems. Commissioned by the United States Congress, the NCWQR provides research, monitoring, education, and outreach, and has been at the forefront of the northwest Ohio algae crisis. The team performs chemical analysis of freshwater samples, biological assessment of aquatic communities and watershed modeling throughout the Great Lakes region. Because the NCWQR is located in Heidelberg’s Gillmor Science Hall, students have access to a world-class lab and are able to work alongside professional scientist. Students are also given unique internship and research opportunities in fields of biology, chemistry, water resources, and geology. The community can benefit from resources including water testing and tributary data which measures the amount of pollutants that move downstream past a sampling station on a river or creek each year.
