Red Raven Tattoo and Art Gallery will hold the opening of their new gallery installation, "The Frankie San Collection" Saturday, April 16, from 6-10 p.m. The event also includes a meet and greet with collection curator Rev. Kyuzo Miyaishi.
Miyaishi, also known as Frankie San, worked in South Carolina corrections facilities for 40 years and continues to visit and assist in prisons today. Over a lifetime of working with death row and maximum security inmates, Miyaishi collected more than 250 works of art created by the inmates. Each piece is a unique view of not only the prisoners' artistic abilities, but also of their psychology and experiences.
Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1929, Miyaishi joined the Japanese Imperial Navy at age 15. In 1961, he came to America, where he studied religion and was ordained by the Lutheran church in 1973. Miyaishi first began visiting prisons in 1963 while a student of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. He retired in 2001 and now shows the art that he collected during his years working with inmates.
