The Steyer Nature Preserve was created in 2003 through the gift of land from Tony and Image removed.Kathy Steyer, money from a Clean Ohio Grand and an ODNR Scenic River Grant which produced a park of 89 acres with almost one mile of Sandusky River frontage. With additional grants from Clean Ohio and ODNR Division of Wildlife the park grew to 141 acres. The local volunteer committee has developed 4.17 miles of trails complete with eight bridges over beautiful ravines. The northern 71 acres are a non-hunting area. Access to the northern park area is from the Abbott’s Bridge Scenic River Access parking lot off CR 33 at the Sandusky River. An informational kiosk is found at the parking lot. The southern 70 acres of the preserve is open to hunting in season and is connected to the ODNR Sugar Creek State Wildlife Area with hunter access and parking off Pleasant Twp. Rd. 148. The preserve features deep ravines, scenic bluff views of the river, picturesque bridges over ravines, five loop trails (easy to difficult), canoeing, diverse wildflowers, hardwood trees, excellent fishing, brooks and streams, and two oak trees nearly 300 years old. The park is closed from dusk to dawn, and visitors are asked to follow all of the park rules.
