Jefferson Street streetscaping project moving forward

Project to be completed by end of year

TIFFIN, OHIO – July 1, 2020 – The City of Tiffin has announced that it has selected a contractor and will begin work on streetscaping Jefferson Street between East Market and East Perry Streets including new curb and sidewalks, decorative stamped concrete between the sidewalk and curb, stamped concrete crosswalks, decorative light poles, signage, trees, and streetscaping furniture including but not limited to trash cans, bike racks, planters, hanging baskets.  The project also includes the resurfacing and striping of Jefferson Street and the resurfacing of the alley to the north of National Corner and the Frost-Kalnow Amphitheater on the East Green and to the east of the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library.

The project was awarded to Smith Paving & Excavating from Norwalk and construction is to start in the fall. The expected completion date is Dec. 31, 2020.

State Rep. Bill Reineke and State Sen. Dave Burke helped secure $300,000 for the project in the previous State Capital Budget, which was then awarded by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The grant was awarded to support the Frost-Kalnow Amphitheater on the East Green and National Corner developments in downtown Tiffin. The City Engineer’s office designed and will manage the construction administration and inspection for this project. By doing so and not using consultants, the City of Tiffin was able to maximize the grant dollars for this project.

The Downtown Tiffin Design Committee provided input on the streetscaping items and helped to coordinate with the City Engineer’s Office.

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz commented, “I’m so proud to see that this project is moving forward. Thank you to City Engineer Matt Watson and his office for maximizing this grant funding and ultimately improving the look of Downtown Tiffin.”

Dedication of Tiffin’s spectacular urban park as ‘National Corner’

Press Release submitted by National Machinery LLC

Downtown Tiffin, Ohio, has made a major splash in its continuing renaissance.  Thanks to the philanthropy and community activism of National Machinery LLC, its foundation, and its founding family, a stunning downtown park with a creative splash pad area has opened to the public. Located just one block from the main intersection of downtown Tiffin, the 2.5 acre East Green complex is the vision of Andrew Kalnow, the CEO and major owner of National Machinery, a 145-year old manufacturing firm that is a global leader in cold forming equipment and technology.

Last year saw the completion of the Frost-Kalnow Amphitheater on the East Green, a uniquely designed outdoor performance venue that sports curvilinear tiers, perimeter walls, and open green space.  A summer concert series has been organized to stage at the amphitheater top quality music performances by musicians from the greater region.  (See the website for more information and photos of the amphitheater: www.eastgreenconcerts.com.)

On August 19 the companion urban park to the amphitheater was dedicated as “National Corner.”  The park boasts the same curvilinear architectural style as the amphitheater, as well as a smaller pavilion for public restrooms that matches the large stage pavilion at the adjacent amphitheater.  A high tech splash pad is the main feature of the park with a repertoire of several programs and a colored light fountain display at night. The splash pad area even has its own mini amphitheater hugging the aquatic area. The park is richly landscaped with various flower beds spread along the curvilinear perimeter wall, as well as a secluded garden with waterfall to be discovered and enjoyed.

Throughout the day over 1200 people visited the East Green to partake in the ongoing events including the “National Corner” dedication and celebration, and music fest at the Frost-Kalnow Amphitheater.  The East Green complex that includes both the new National Corner urban park and the amphitheater is owned and overseen by the East Green Foundation.
