ABR approves two Façade Enhancement Grants

$40,000 remains in city fund for 2017

Elks LodgeTIFFIN, OHIO – March 7, 2017 – Today, the Architectural Board of Review (ABR) approved two Façade Enhancement Grants for downtown building improvements. The projects were awarded a combined total of $5,337, for a total reinvestment in downtown Tiffin of $10,675, leaving close to $40,000 available of the $100,000 set aside by the City of Tiffin for 2017.

The Tiffin Elks Lodge, located at 106 E. Perry St., will be replacing the third floor windows to match the second floor, and repairing stucco. This is the third grant the building has received, one for each year of the program. “Being able to apply for Façade Grant funding each year has allowed us to make a strategic plan for building repairs,” Elks Exalted Ruler Joe Steinmetz said. “It also eases some of the burden of maintaining the building.”

Phat Cakes Exterior 2The Phat Cakes building, located at 45 S. Washington St. will also be undergoing some window repair. It was approved for a grant including the replacement and repair of wood trim and flashing around the front windows, as well as roof, gutter and shingle repair.

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz was pleased to see the grant is being used both by repeat applicants and newcomers. “One of today’s approvals shows how the grant has fostered continuous improvements to our downtown buildings, and the other shows that there are still building owners taking advantage of the grant for the first time,” he said.

ABR approves three Façade Enhancement Grants

Assured TitleApprovals bring total investment to $284,000 for 2016

TIFFIN, OHIO – May 17, 2016 – Today, the Architectural Board of Review (ABR) approved three Façade Enhancement Grants, bringing the total investment into downtown facades to $284,000 and the total number of projects to 10 for 2016.

These approvals leave just under $10,000 of the $100,000 set aside by the City of Tiffin for Façade Enhancement Grants for 2016. Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz is encouraged by the progress: “Every year since we implemented this program in 2014, we have seen an overwhelming amount of interest, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down, but rather increasing.”

The Assured Title Agency building on the corner of South Washington and East Market Streets will undergo a $20,000 facelift including repair of siding, masonry and windows as well as painting. The largest project of the three is for the Tiffin Elks Lodge #94; a $22,000 roof replacement project. Both projects received a full $10,000 grant, the highest amount possible for the matching grant.

The third approval was for 94-96 South Washington Street, to replace or repair second floor windows. The $17,910 project will receive a $8,955 grant. This building, as well as the Elks Lodge, also received a Façade Enhancement Grant in 2015.

Together, the three projects represent a more than $71,000 investment. Since its inception in September 2014, the Façade Enhancement Grant Program has spurred $1.14 million in downtown investment through 37 projects.

Tiffin Elks building to receive façade enhancement

Elks LodgeElks Lodge is the fifth Façade Enhancement project of 2015

TIFFIN, OHIO – April 21, 2015 – During a meeting this afternoon, the Architectural Board of Review approved the Tiffin Elks Lodge #94 at 106 East Perry Street for a Façade Enhancement Grant. This will be the fifth façade enhancement project of 2015.

Updates to the building’s exterior will include the installation of windows on the Jefferson Street side of the building, where the original windows have been boarded up, and the painting of the balcony and front façade. The cost of the upgrades is estimated at $6,300, with half of that reimbursed by a Façade Enhancement Grant.

Joe Steinmetz, Exalted Ruler of the Tiffin Elks, is excited about the project. “The lodge is important to our organization, and this grant is going to help us restore the structure and keep the building looking great.”

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz is happy to see another positive change downtown due to the Façade Enhancement Program. “The Elks Lodge is a historic part of Tiffin and I am glad that they are able to use the grant program to revitalize the building’s look.”

According to local historian John Huss, the contract for the Elks Lodge construction was given to Emil Converse of Massillon for $30,000 in June 1914. The building was designed by local architect George Netcher, who also designed the Tiffin Knights of Columbus building, and was described by a local newspaper as the “acme of architectural perfection.” Several thousand people toured the facility at an open house held after construction was completed in June 1915.
