TSEP hires new Operations Manager

Tiffin University business graduate and successful nonprofit administrator to start July 12

TIFFIN, OHIO – June 29, 2021 – After a three-month state and national search, Tiffin-Seneca Economic Partnership (TSEP) is proud to announce that Corrina Haynes will be joining as the first Operations Manager in the organization’s history. Haynes will be starting in her new role on Monday, July 12, and will be working at TSEP’s offices at 96 S. Washington St. in the heart of historic downtown Tiffin.

“I am excited to be joining this great organization and look forward to being a part of making a big impact on the lives of people in Tiffin and rural Seneca County,” Haynes said. “I am eager to put my passion for nonprofit work, love for this community, and administrative and business skills to use supporting the team. I want to help continue the great growth we’ve seen here in recent years.”

A Tiffin resident and 2021 graduate of Tiffin University with a degree in business administration, Haynes is leaving her current full-time administrative and victim advocate position at First Step – Wood, Wyandot, Seneca & Sandusky Counties, a family resource center that provides a variety of services runs the first domestic violence shelter built in Ohio and the fourth one built in the nation. There, Haynes was responsible for assisting with helping clients access resources, company reporting, information technology, fundraising strategy and implementation, volunteer recruitment and management, social media and external communications, file and document management, scheduling, staff support, and communicating with stakeholders on a variety of issues.

In addition to working for First Step, Haynes also has volunteered the past few years as a special advocate and guardian ad litem with CASA of Seneca, Sandusky & Wyandot Counties, where she works with the courts and significant people in a child’s life to ensure the best interests of the child are protected. Haynes also has experience in the retail sector, executing merchandising and customer experience strategy for Lowe’s.

“It has taken about a year to get to this point,” said TSEP President & CEO David Zak. “After months of strategic planning, budgeting, developing the position, we received submissions from 33 candidates, which was narrowed down to 12 we interviewed. Three finalists then met with our board of directors, and at the end of it all, Corrina was clearly the best choice. We are so fortunate to have her join our team.”

TIFFIN, OHIO – June 25, 2021 – Tiffin-Seneca Economic Partnership is proud to have named Heidelberg University and Tiffin University as the winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award during the 2021 Annual Meeting June 3, 2021.

Heidelberg College was founded in 1850 by members of the German Reformed Church who named it after the Heidelberg Catechism of 1563. The school was as a co-ed campus from the beginning, which was unusual for its time. Heidelberg’s American Junior Year program at Heidelberg University in Heidelberg, Germany, is the oldest exchange program between an American university and a German university. In 2009, Heidelberg College became Heidelberg University, to reflect more appropriately the academic offerings of the school. Heidelberg offers 36 undergraduate courses of study, four graduate programs, 16 minors, and 13 pre-professional programs.

“We’ve always been a welcoming community, a welcoming campus, and we’ve embraced faculty, staff, to come together to help lift students up from all backgrounds that come to Heidelberg University,” said Heidelberg President Rob Huntington.

Tiffin University was founded in 1888 after Heidelberg decided its commercial management division didn’t align with its mission. The school was founded as Tiffin Business College, first located in Downtown Tiffin and then moved to Miami Street to a former school building, which today serves as the Main Classroom Building. Over the years, TU has successfully transitioned from traditional seated students to a mixture of seated and online students, from across the country and around the world. Today, TU offers more than 25 majors through on-campus and online learning that result in real advantages for its students.

“Over our history, we’ve really grown, not only in terms of our student growth, but also in terms of our campus. If you look around our campus today, it looks very different than it even did 15 years ago, 25 years ago, and definitely 30 and 40 years ago,” said TU President Lillian Schumacher.

Having started as an institution that was one, and then going their separate ways, today the administrations at Heidelberg and TU often seek out opportunities to collaborate, such as the annual Around the Town event.

“Tiffin University and Heidelberg collaborate in many, many ways – and it wasn’t always like that,” Schumacher said. “Our institutions today work really well together, and I think we’re both very proud of the fact that we are part of the education community of Tiffin, Ohio.”

“We share, as I think all people should share, this common goal which is that we want to attract people from outside the area to come to Tiffin and Seneca County, initially through the educational experience at the college and university level, and then we would like them to stay, to build lives here, which I think is great for the entire Tiffin and Seneca County community,” Huntington said.

“These institutions have had a profound effect on our economy, our community, and, for some of us, professionally and personally,” said Lisa Hohman, TSEP board member. Hohman, CEO of Concordance Healthcare Solutions, is a Heidelberg graduate and TU Board Member.

The Covid-19 global pandemic created challenges for the universities, but both managed to adapt during difficult times.

“This school has worked its way through and survived,” Huntington said. “Going all the way through to the global flu epidemic of 1918 to the global covid pandemic of 2019. We’re leaning into it to work our way through this Covid Pandemic.”

“It has been a long almost 13 months now, and higher education, as well as in education in general, not to mention our world, so many of us have had to adapt and adjust due to the pandemic,” Schumacher said. “It was seamless for the most part, but of course, when you go through disruption like this, you grow and adjust along the way.

“Our students are amazing – the college students today, they are some of the most resilient,” she added.

Schumacher thanked TSEP and its members for recognizing both Heidelberg University and Tiffin University for the Lifetime Achievement Award, which Huntington echoed.

“It is so fitting and so appropriate that we would each and together win this award together at the same time, in the same year,” he said.

TU Welcomes 512 New Students to Campus

TIFFIN, OH —Tiffin University welcomed 512 new students to its campus this fall.  This number includes freshmen, international as well as transfer students.

New students hail from 27 states and 19 countries (new countries this year include Austria and Zambia).

Tiffin University to launch its first Ph.D. Program

TIFFIN UNIVERSITY, Tiffin, OH—Tiffin University will launch its first Ph.D. Program beginning fall semester 2019.

The degree, Global Leadership and Change, was approved by the Institutional Actions Council of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) at its meeting on Dec. 4, 2018.

“This exciting step forward is in line with our commitment to Celebrating Cultural Uniqueness (CCU),” said TU President Dr. Lillian Schumacher. “CCU builds global and cultural appreciation into our institutional DNA and the word global is not limited to international, ethnicity or race. It also includes differences in gender, religion, region, financial situation, sexual orientation, or physical ability—all elements that shape a person’s worldview,” she said.

“Global leaders are critical,” Schumacher continued, “especially in today’s complex and volatile political environment. Students who enroll in our Ph.D. program can expect to earn an education focused on leadership theory and practice that is inclusive of understanding, working with, and respecting others who are different from us. Providing this level of knowledge and ability sets TU apart from many other institutions of higher learning.”

Global Leadership and Change was developed with the adult professional in mind,” said Dr. Kenneth Rauch, Director of the Ph.D. Program. “It was designed with a curriculum to recognize the challenges and tremendous opportunities within today’s cross-cultural work environment. Practitioners in leadership roles in today’s business and educational environments have often been excluded by the traditional delivery of Ph.D. programs and extensive residency requirements within these programs. TU’s degree is offered within the online format and features limited residency requirements. Flexibility and the relational approach of faculty engagement allow students to work independently, but never alone.”

“It is imperative to gain as much exposure to other cultures and different perspectives as possible,” said Dr. Peter Holbrook, Provost. “Learning about how people in different cultures think, communicate, and achieve results will advance any career. Tiffin University welcomes largest class ever

+ Kirk Courtyard hands IMG_0867Despite the fact college enrollment is in decline for the sixth straight year in the U.S., Tiffin University welcomed over 520 first-time students to its campus this fall.  This year’s class is one of the largest in the University’s 130-year history. In fact, this year’s 450-member class of first-time, first-year domestic students is the largest incoming class in the institution’s history.

New students hail from 26 states, ranging from California to New York to Florida; and new International students from New Zealand and Bolivia increase the number of countries currently represented on Tiffin’s campus to 27.

Tiffin ranks in top 50 safest college towns nationwide

To compile this report, SafeWise safety experts analyzed the FBI’s most recent crime statistics from 2016 to calculate the total number of violent crimes committed in American college towns. To be in the running, cities needed to exceed 15,000 residents and be home to an accredited college that offered four-year degrees. Towns with for-profit institutions, technical and vocational schools, community colleges, seminaries, field-specific institutions, and schools that only offer two-year degrees were excluded.

TIFFIN, OHIO – August 6, 2018 – The AT&T Foundation presented a $10,000 contribution on Monday to the Year Thirteen, a program providing high school seniors with mentoring and resources to ensure high school success and help them attain post-secondary career goals. The contribution will help fund a part-time director position for the program, which will launch this fall with the Tiffin Columbian High School graduating class of 2019.

Education and student success are a cornerstone of AT&T’s community initiatives. Since 2012, AT&T employees have provided more than 1.6 million hours of mentoring to students, and its AT&T Aspire initiative has committed more than $400 million since 2008 to promote student success in school and beyond. “We are very proud to support this new program for students in Tiffin,” said Nicolette Jaworski, AT&T’s Director of External Affairs for Cleveland and Northwest Ohio. “It aligns perfectly with our desire to see more students be successful.”

The program was modeled after the successful Presidential Pathways initiative started at Marion City Schools under the current superintendent of Tiffin City Schools, Gary Barber. “Much like the Presidential Pathways program, the Year Thirteen will allow us to build and leverage relationships within the community, keep our talent local, and focus on workforce development by putting in place a dynamic system aligned with our community’s needs,” he said. “It will also be a measuring stick for our school system.”

The program focuses on eight key areas designed to promote student success leading up to and following graduation. These areas are: high school success, relationship building, career exploration, career success, job skills, work skills, and community engagement. All students in their senior year at Tiffin Columbian High School will be connected with a counselor that will check in with them periodically throughout the school year and the year following their graduation to promote the student’s success in university, vocational school, or entering the workforce.

Several organizations have partnered to participate in the program including: Tiffin City Schools, Vanguard-Sentinel Career & Technology Centers, Tiffin University, Heidelberg University, Terra State Community College, Seneca County Department of Job & Family Services, Family, Adult & Children First Council, and the Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corp. (SIEDC).

SIEDC facilitated the grant process, citing a workforce gap as a key county-wide concern. “Unemployment is consistently low, and the biggest pipeline of talent is our educational system – K12 and higher education,” SIEDC President and CEO David Zak said. “Improving college completion and preparing high school students for successful careers is, therefore, a top priority, as the workforce needs are at all skill and education levels.”

Seneca County to hold third annual Manufacturing Showcase

TIFFIN, OHIO – July 31, 2018 – The Seneca Department of Job and Family Services/OhioMeansJobs is once again partnering with local organizations and manufacturers to hold Seneca County’s third annual Manufacturing Showcase on October 12, 2018 at the Heminger Center on the Tiffin University campus. The event is an opportunity for area students to learn about careers in manufacturing and participate in hands-on skill demonstrations.

Carol Kern of Seneca DJFS is looking forward to another successful event: “We are excited to host this event for the third year, to get students talking about their options, and we are pleased that businesses and educators see the value in introducing students to different career paths.”

The showcase will focus on six skills: team building, lean practices, employability, machining, supply chain and mechanical engineering/electrical trades/automation. For each skill, there are six spaces available for a hands-on demonstration.

Eleven schools within Seneca County will send 700-750 students to participate in the showcase. The event will last a full day, with students split into one morning session and one afternoon session. Lunch will be provided at no cost.

Several manufacturers are already on board; Callies Performance Products, The Mennel Milling Company, NSI Crankshaft, and Charter Steel of Fostoria have signed on as well as American Fine Sinter, National Machinery, Taiho, Webster, Ballreich’s, and Toledo Molding & Die of Tiffin. Sentinel Career and Technology Center will also have a skilled booth. Tiffin University and IGS Solar announce new solar array for Heminger Center

TIFFIN, OH, JULY 16, 2018 – Tiffin University (TU) and IGS Solar will begin construction this month on the first solar project to be constructed on the rooftop of the Heminger Center located on Miami Street. The solar system will drive a cleaner, emission-free energy platform, as well as mark the beginning of TU’s environmental commitment.

The solar array will consist of 705 panels constructed on 14,000 square feet of rooftop space on the Heminger Center located in the heart of campus. Sized at approximately 240kW (DC), the array will generate roughly 270,000 kWh’s per year which is enough to supply approximately 26% of the annual electricity consumption for the Heminger Center.

This amount of solar power is enough to provide clean electricity for approximately 24 residential homes, offsetting an estimated 195 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year that would otherwise be emitted by a conventional fossil fuel power plant. That amount of emissions avoided is also equivalent to removing 42 cars from the road annually, or avoiding burning 213,331 pounds of coal.

IGS Solar will own, operate, and maintain the array. The company is helping the University integrate solar generation into their energy portfolio while helping them better control the long-term energy costs for their buildings.

The project is estimated to begin construction in October 2018 and be online November 2018.

“With current challenges that surround funding for non-profit universities, Tiffin University feels strongly that we need to examine all means for cost saving initiatives,” said TU President Lillian Schumacher. “The University is also intentional in doing what is right for the student body, faculty, staff, and local community by putting forth clean energy standards and striving to meet them.”

“We hope that opportunities for solar in Ohio continue to grow because the economic benefits are substantial,” stated Patrick Smith, Vice President of IGS Solar. “Working with Tiffin University to help control their energy costs by utilizing clean, renewable power has been a great success. Downtown Tiffin wins Heritage Ohio Award

SIEDC, Chamber, universities recognized for Around the Town event

TIFFIN, OHIO – October 18, 2017 –  The Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corporation (SIEDC) Downtown Marketing Committee and the Seneca Regional Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Services received the Heritage Ohio Award for “Best Main Street Committee Event” for the annual Around the Town event in a ceremony at the Ohio Statehouse October 17.

Around the Town is an annual event introducing incoming Heidelberg and Tiffin University students to businesses and organizations in the community. For 20 years, the event was held on the colleges’ respective campuses. In 2015, the Chamber partnered with the Downtown Marketing Committee through SIEDC and event was brought to a central location downtown, bringing both schools together and highlighting the proximity of downtown to the students.

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz applauded the partnership and stressed the importance of downtown revitalization efforts. “Around the Town is a wonderful event bringing together the college students and the community,” he said. “It is great to see our community organizations working together, and our commitment to the Main Street downtown approach paying off.”

Tiffin officially became a Heritage Ohio Main Street community in 2016, after two years of affiliate membership. The Ohio Main Street Program works with communities across the state to revitalize their historic or traditional commercial areas. The program works on a four-point approach emphasizing, organization, design, promotions and marketing, and economic development in downtown revitalization.
