The goal of the program is to review the skills, policies and procedures that will enable organizations, employers and communities to become more skilled in working with individuals who are in poverty.
Explore mental models of poverty, middle class and wealth;
Learn the hidden rules of each class;
Understand key concepts that underline Bridges Out of Poverty;
Learn the different registers of language;
Identify resources; and
Explore how to use Bridges constructs with clients.

Individuals living in generational poverty are excellent problem solvers. How can we engage people from all classes?
The U.S. Small Business Administration is seeking 15 applicants for its Emerging Leaders Initiative to be held in Tiffin later this year. This is the first time the program, a seven month course for entrepreneurs looking to take their business to the next level, is being offered in a community of this size.
The training program is provided at no cost to the participants, and the StreetWise Steps™ to Small Business Growth curriculum gives small business owners an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience through a combination of executive education, practical tips based on real-life business experience, and advice from business leaders that can be readily applied.

Emerging Leaders Initiative provides free entrepreneurship education and training for executives of small, poised-for-growth companies that are potential job creators. This intensive executive entrepreneurship series includes nearly 100 hours of classroom time. It also provides opportunities for small business owners to work with experienced coaches and mentors, attend workshops, and develop connections with their peers, local leaders, and the financial community.
Participants are given the opportunity to work with experienced mentors, attend specialized workshops and develop connections with their peers, city leaders, and the financial community. The Initiative incorporates a curriculum that is research-based and nationally scalable, enabling participating businesses to engage in focused development and expansion strategies, including options for accessing new capital and securing government contracts.
Since its inception in 2008, the SBA’s Emerging Leaders Initiative has trained over 5,000 small business owners, creating over 6,500 jobs, generating over $300 million in new financing, and securing over $3.16 billion in government contracts.
Given the success of SBA’s Emerging Leaders, the SBA has expanded the initiative to include 60 locations to help growing entrepreneurs in emerging markets.
According to Steve Hillard, Terra State’s Executive Director of Workforce Development & Corporate Partnerships, the partnership will allow businesses to access the expertise of DDI at a more affordable cost. “The Kern Center is able leverage our partnership to acquire materials at a much lower cost and to bring certified trainers from a more local region that saves on travel expenses.”
The Kern Center will be offering trainings three times a year. Modules will cover topics, such as, Communication for Leadership Success, Coaching for Peak Performance, Driving Change, Resolving Workplace Conflict, and Building and Sustaining Trust.
“The Kern Center is able to accommodate any company’s budget and training program focus,” Hillard says. “This partnership enables the Kern Center to offer another level of leadership training to businesses in need of a program that goes beyond the basics.”

The Ohio State University Extension in Seneca County aims to connect the university’s resources and knowledge to the community. Originally working closely with farmers to share research on growing better crops and livestock, the OSU Extension now works with many different parts of the community. Terra State Community College President Dr. Jerome Webster announces new Workforce Demand Scholarship.
October 2, 2017 (Fremont, OH) – According to the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce, 64 percent of Ohio jobs in 2020 will require postsecondary degrees or credentials. However, approximately 45% of Ohio high school graduates do not attend college directly after high school. That is why it is imperative that this year’s high school seniors give serious thought about continuing their education beyond high school. To assist those in their decision, Terra State Community College is offering 2018 graduates the opportunity to attend class tuition-free if they are pursuing a career in a high-demand job field through the Workforce Demand Scholarship program. In addition to an education, students will also gain a guaranteed work-based experience.
Terra State will provide up to an Associate’s Degree tuition-free to 2018 high school graduates. The Workforce Demand Scholarship is available to students majoring in these academic programs:
Digital Media Technology
Health Information Technology
Management (Business, Agribusiness and Hospitality)
Robotics-Integrated Manufacturing Technology
“The majority of jobs need or will need a post-high school education,” says Heath Martin, Terra State’s Assistant Vice President for Student and Enrollment Services. “The Workforce Demand Scholarship is a vehicle that will allow 2018 high school graduates to take advantage of getting an Associate’s Degree tuition-free.”
The Workforce Demand Scholarship will pay the gap between the cost of tuition and general fees and state and federal grants received by the student. “For example,” Martin says, “At Terra State, the total cost of tuition and general fees for the fall and spring semesters is $4926. If a student receives a Pell grant in the amount of $2000, your scholarship is the difference in the amount and would be $2296. However, books and other fees are not covered by the scholarship.”
To qualify, a student must be enrolled full-time (twelve or more credit hours) for the fall and spring semesters and part-time (six or more credit hours) for the summer semester. Students who are awarded the Workforce Demand Scholarship will be provided the opportunity to participate in a work-based experience with an employer in Terra State’s service area.
Develop an academic plan, sign a participation contract and register for classes by June 15, 2018
“A recipient of the Workforce Demand Scholarship will need to enroll full-time at Terra State and attend consecutive fall and spring terms,” Martin points out. “Students will have to maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average and have a course completion rate of 68%. Students also have the option of enrolling in summer school.” Recipients will lose all benefits if they stop taking classes and resume at a later date.
